MAURITIUS – Over two hundred Malagasy nationals in irregular status

Malagasy workers residing in Mauritius are denouncing difficult working conditions and practices they equate to exploitation. Confiscation of passports, long working hours, and insufficient remuneration are among the main complaints reported. There are also suspicions regarding the existence of networks profiting from the vulnerability of these employees.

The association Malagasy Miray Hina, which brings together Malagasy nationals living in Mauritius, is raising the alarm. Its president, James Andriamalala, indicates that he receives daily calls from workers facing difficulties related to their employment or administrative documents. He is calling on the Malagasy state to take firm measures to ensure the protection of its citizens’ rights.

At the same time, Mauritian authorities are intensifying operations targeting foreigners in irregular situations. According to official data from the Passport and Immigration Office (PIO), 242 Malagasy nationals, including 153 men and 89 women, were arrested between January 1 and September 25, 2026. They represent the largest group among the 724 foreigners apprehended in Mauritius for irregular stay.
