ANTSIRANANA – Vaccination continues to face a less visible reality

Polio, measles, and vitamin A deficiency: the regional vaccination campaign was launched this Monday at the Tanambao dispensary. Faced with persistent rumors, health authorities reiterate a fundamental principle: vaccination remains the most effective way to protect children against potentially fatal diseases.

This five-day operation, conducted like in other regions of Madagascar, aims to contain the active circulation of polio and measles in the country. While some mothers came early to immunize their children, others remain hesitant due to misinformation.

Dr. Paulin Manjary Ramasy, Regional Director of Public Health, emphasized the dangers of polio, which can cause irreversible paralysis. He clarified the administration methods: oral drops for polio (0-59 months), shoulder injections for measles (9-59 months), and vitamin A supplements (6-59 months).

Despite door-to-door awareness efforts, health workers face significant resistance, including hostility from some residents. Deep-seated beliefs, family traditions, online rumors, geographical distance, and financial constraints remain major obstacles to the campaign’s success.
