The rehabilitation of the National Road 4 (RN4), connecting Antananarivo to Mahajanga, is progressing. The condition of the road surface is significantly improving, particularly in several previously problematic areas.
Traffic is becoming more fluid, and travel time between the two cities has decreased. The journey from the capital to Mahajanga can now be completed in less than twelve hours, including short breaks, especially for off-road vehicles and light cars.
The 90 km stretch between Maevatanana and Ambondromamy can now be covered in less than an hour and a half, compared to over two hours previously.
The rehabilitation of the Tsarahonenana black spot, covering an 8 km section between the rural commune of Andranomamy (at the border of the Boeny region) and the Tsaratanana junction, is now complete. This portion, long feared by road users, is now paved from the Ambalavondro fokontany to the entrance of the village of Tsarahonenana.
However, deep potholes persist at the exit of Ambondromamy towards Mahajanga. The road surface remains heavily degraded and requires significant repairs.
Conversely, between Tsaramandroso and Ambatolaoka, as well as near the charcoal makers’ village of Amborondolo, the rehabilitation is fully finished, with improved traffic flow and new road markings.
Work is also complete on the 12 km stretch connecting the exit of Andranofasika to the Befotoana fokontany, passing through the Ankarafantsika National Park. Significant widening work has been carried out, road markings are visible, and numerous traffic signs have been installed. The two speed bumps near the national park entrance have been removed.
Work continues on several sections, notably in the Marovoay district, between PK 413 and 498, in the rural commune of Tanambao Andranolava. A technician from the Ministry of Public Works stated that the progress rate is currently at 69%, with all work expected to be completed by the end of the month.
Nevertheless, from Ambovondramanesy to the access to Berivotra, the road remains very degraded and riddled with holes. On the approximately 40 km stretch between Berivotra and Mahajanga, half of the section remains particularly challenging for users, with frequent jolts, and the final leg to Mahajanga still takes an hour and a half.
