The open-heart surgery mission at the Soavinandriana Hospital Center (Cenhosoa) has reached its eighth edition. Since its launch in 2024, approximately forty children have undergone surgery.
The mission, conducted at Cenhosoa, is currently at its midpoint. Launched in May 2024 for a five-year duration, the program has completed eight missions to date, with forty-two patients operated on. So far, all have survived. “Of the 42 people operated on, all have survived. Some of the patients operated on during the last mission [from September 28 to October 2] have already been discharged from the hospital,” a source within the hospital center stated this weekend.
Malagasy surgeons and anesthesiologists are gaining significant experience. This eighth mission was distinguished by closed-heart surgeries and pacemaker replacements performed by the local team, in addition to open-heart operations, according to a statement published by the Ministry of Armed Forces last week.
“The doctors have made significant progress and now master these cardiac interventions. Already specialists in cardiac surgery or anesthesia, they have been trained in open-heart surgery and the techniques it requires,” the source added. Their skills are expected to continue to grow throughout the missions scheduled until the agreement expires in 2029. They will also continue to undergo training, with health professionals traveling to Reunion Island in December for further instruction.
