Container storage and transit are set to become more efficient thanks to new developments planned for the site. The logistics capacity of Toamasina is expected to be strengthened with the development of the Tsarakofafa multimodal logistics and port platform, as part of the Toamasina port expansion project. Located about eight kilometers from the port, this infrastructure will primarily serve as a temporary storage area for containers before they are reshipped to secondary ports in the region.
The execution of several development works has been entrusted to the Malagasy Public Works Development Company (SMATP). A partnership agreement with the Autonomous Port of Toamasina (SPAT) was signed yesterday in Ankorondrano. According to the Director General of SPAT, Heritiana Anicet Randriambahoaka, “this agreement formalizes the awarding of the contract to SMATP, whose bid was the most competitive.”
The project is expected to last twelve weeks. It includes the construction of approximately one kilometer of concrete roads, a 1.6-kilometer canal, as well as the installation of slabs, sidewalks, and streetlights. Planting palm trees is also among the planned works. These improvements are primarily intended to enhance the connection between the platform and the port, complementing other ongoing infrastructure projects, such as a parking lot, a roundabout, and a bridge designed to ensure connectivity with the port site.
For economic operators, the stakes go beyond infrastructure construction. A platform dedicated to temporary container storage can help better organize the movement of goods and streamline their transport. This organization can also facilitate operations related to the transport and distribution of products entering or leaving the country. The project also mobilizes two Malagasy public companies. For SPAT, the choice of SMATP is intended to allow the latter to develop its activities and increase its turnover, while also promoting local expertise in the realization of strategic infrastructure.
Ultimately, the Tsarakofafa platform is intended to strengthen Toamasina’s logistics capabilities and support trade with secondary ports in the region. For both businesses and users of the transport chain, the goal is to have a better-structured goods circuit capable of supporting the growth of economic activities.
