The Platform of National Directions for Private Education (PDNE) and the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research have reached an agreement regarding the Baccalaureate examination.
The announcement of options A, C, and D within the L and S categories for the 2027 Baccalaureate, made by the Ministry on October 1st, has changed the landscape for private schools. Following a decree earlier this year that abolished these traditional series, some private schools had already adopted the new curriculum, replacing A, C, and D with Literary, Scientific, and Organization-Society-Economy (OSE) series. Andovola Rabetsimba, director of the Diadema private high school in Ampatsakana, stated, “We don’t know which curriculum to apply after this new decision. The old and new programs are different. The new one is good, but we are struggling with the teaching materials.”
In public high schools, which have largely been using the new series for several years, the decision has little impact. Meanwhile, Catholic confessional schools are satisfied with the flexibility, as they had already begun the school year using the traditional curriculum and series, according to Father Jules Ranaivosoa, Secretary General of the Episcopal Commission for Catholic Education.
The Ministry of Higher Education clarifies that this is not a step backward but a transition period to facilitate the shift to the new curriculum. For the 2027 Baccalaureate, the Ministry and private schools have agreed to integrate familiar sub-options within the new categories: candidates in the L category can choose between L, A1, or A2, while those in the S category can choose between S, C, or D. This allows for the retention of traditional profiles focused on advanced mathematics or life and earth sciences.
