HYDROELECTRIC PROJECT – Volobe Amont reaches a new milestone

The memorandum of understanding for the Volobe Amont project was signed this Wednesday at the Iavoloha State Palace, reviving the plan for a power plant with a capacity of over 120 megawatts. The focus now shifts to finalizing financing before construction begins.

The agreement was signed between the Malagasy State and the Compagnie Générale d’Hydroélectricité de Volobe (CGHV). Located on the Ivondro River in the Atsinanana region, the future plant is expected to generate over 120 megawatts of electricity. The document was signed by the Minister of Energy and Hydrocarbons, Radonirina Lucas Rabearimanga, and the CEO of CGHV, Rémy Huber.

The ceremony was attended by the President of the Republic, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, along with the European Union Ambassador, Roland Kobia, and the French Ambassador, Arnaud Guillois. Partners include the European Union, the European Investment Bank, and the World Bank. The EU’s contribution is announced at 212 million euros, or over 1 trillion ariary, which will also support the transmission line project.

Regarding supply, the production will be split between Toamasina (60 MW) and the Antananarivo interconnected grid via PRIRTEM I. Annual production is expected to reach approximately 750 gigawatt-hours. The project, which has been in development since 2016, represents a significant effort to boost energy availability for households and businesses across the country.
