Documentary writing, from concept to distribution, was the focus of a masterclass led yesterday by French author, director, and producer Alexandre Lenot at the Institut Français de Madagascar, as part of the Ant’Sary Doc Mada event.
How can an idea born from reality be transformed into a structured documentary project for the cinema? This was the central question addressed by Alexandre Lenot as he shared his expertise with masterclass participants. A French author, director, and producer, he notably worked on ‘Saveur Bitume,’ discussing its writing process and his relationships with producers and broadcasters, such as Arte. The meeting covered the various stages of a project, from writing to distribution, as well as the professional collaborations involved in its realization.
This event is part of the DOC OI writing residency, held from September 28 to October 2 and hosted in Madagascar for the first time. About ten resident authors are developing their documentary projects with professional guidance. The masterclass also attracted others interested in documentary filmmaking and cinema in general.
For Anatole Ramaroson, director of Ant’Sary Doc Mada, this initiative is a highlight of the fourth edition. ‘This masterclass allows our filmmakers to discover working methods for documentary films used abroad,’ he explained. He also hopes to see increased exchanges between Malagasy project leaders and international professionals. ‘The goal is to facilitate meetings between Malagasy film project holders, producers, and international broadcasters right here in Madagascar,’ he emphasized. This approach aligns with the Indian Ocean Co-production Forum, organized annually in Madagascar by the Asa Sary Association.
The support for authors complements the Ant’Sary Doc Mada competition, which this year brings together seventeen works from ten countries and territories: ten short documentary films, six feature films, and one digital experience.
