FESTIVAL – Madajazzcar expands to five cities

The 37th edition of Madajazzcar is expanding its stages to five cities, focusing on sharing to bring jazz closer to diverse audiences.

Jazz is stepping out of its usual boundaries. For its 37th edition, Madajazzcar will take place from October 1st to 10th across five cities: Antananarivo, Antsirabe, Toamasina, Manakara, and Toliara. Under the high patronage of the Ministry of Communication and Culture, the festival is themed “Le Souffle en Partage” (Sharing the Breath), with a program focused on jazz dissemination and cooperation.

In Antananarivo, several public spaces will host free stages, including the City Hall square, the Andohalo Garden, and Jazz at the University of Antananarivo. Events are also planned in various partner venues. This presence in multiple cities reflects the festival’s desire to make jazz accessible to a wider audience.

Before the main festival events, the “Madajazzcar Springboards” are already setting the tone. Workshops have been organized in Toamasina, Antsirabe, and Antananarivo. This phase highlights a new generation of musicians and trainers, including Joro Rakotozafiarison, Vatsiahy Ravaloson, Tahinavibe, and Lova Ramahefason.

These initiatives also demonstrate the dynamism of the Malagasy jazz scene and the importance placed on the next generation. Participants are preparing ahead of the main events of this 37th edition.

The international dimension remains present. The German Embassy plans for the participation of its ambassador to Kenya, Sebastian Groth, who will perform on stage with Kenyan musicians. The Swiss Embassy is supporting an initiative for young minors at the Mandrosoa rehabilitation and penitentiary center.

The French Embassy continues its support through the Institut Français de Madagascar and the network of Alliances Françaises. The festival also benefits from the support of partners such as BRED Madagasikara Banque Populaire.

Finally, Madajazzcar continues its outreach beyond the territory with Radio Madajazzcar. This 24/7 web radio allows the festival’s artists and performances to be broadcast to an audience beyond the borders.

Between the Springboards, free stages, and events in five cities, this 37th edition aims to bring jazz closer to the public and highlight the vitality of jazz creation in Madagascar.
