Catering: People with disabilities receive professional training

People with disabilities are being introduced to the hotel and catering industry. Thirteen individuals, supported by the Fanarenana center—which has been assisting children and young people with disabilities for over 20 years—have been trained by a French professional in the sector.

“The training lasted three weeks. Of course, these three weeks are not enough. The next step now is the internship,” said Patrice Raoul, president of the association, during the certificate presentation ceremony held at IKM Antsahavola on Thursday.

Hotel and restaurant owners were present at the ceremony to mark their commitment to hosting these young people for internships. This initiative is a godsend for people with disabilities. According to the General Directorate for Employment Promotion at the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Civil Service, only 10% of people with disabilities have access to decent employment in Madagascar as of the beginning of this year.

Schooling, as well as access to university, remains difficult for them at times. However, the Fanarenana association asserts that they have potential. “Based on the results of our support, it is better to prioritize training, education, and schooling. Some of them are already studying at university,” says Patrice Raoul. People with disabilities have the right to education and training, according to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
