COLONEL RANDRIANIRINA: ‘The population expects results in the fight against insecurity’

The national army conference concluded on Saturday. Colonel Michaël Randrianirina took the opportunity to emphasize that the population is expecting concrete results in the fight against insecurity.

Results. This is what the population expects in the fight against insecurity, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, Head of State, reminded the senior officials of the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) gathered at the Mining Business Center in Ivato on Saturday.

The meeting marked the closing of the army conference, which opened on January 26. The National Gendarmerie and the National Police also held their own conferences. The resolutions resulting from the army’s conference were presented to the Head of State. He reminded the FDS that the reforms envisioned following these consultations will only make sense to the population if they improve their living conditions. Security plays an important role in this, he stressed.

He believes that committing to reforms is a good thing, but their implementation requires self-sacrifice. ‘Nevertheless, the population expects major changes in the field of security. This falls entirely under the responsibility of the Defense and Security Forces,’ declared Colonel Randrianirina. He insisted several times on the need to translate the resolutions presented on Saturday into action, ‘for the establishment of lasting security for the population.’

Beyond electricity cuts and water supply difficulties, insecurity remains one of the problems the State must face. In both rural and urban areas, armed robberies, hold-ups, cattle rustling, and the kidnapping of albino children are causing concern. Kidnappings in urban areas, which seem to have experienced a lull for some time, have also left their mark. These events have fueled fear and led to acts of popular justice.

Some crimes are committed in broad daylight. The presence of surveillance cameras in several major cities does not always seem to deter perpetrators. ‘The return to normal life for the population is a priority for the State. Security is part of it,’ the Head of State affirmed.

For him, the fight against insecurity also affects political stability. On Saturday, he recalled remarks made during the opening of the army conference in January: ‘I shared with you the fact that the stability of the Refoundation rests on lasting security.’

Colonel Randrianirina also insisted on the proximity of the FDS to the population. This issue refers in particular to the exemplary nature of its members. Abuses, corruption, and inappropriate behavior by some FDS elements indeed undermine the population’s trust and widen the distance between them.
