Madagascar has adopted a new law on the use of nuclear energy. On September 24, 2026, deputies approved the amended bill regarding the safe, secure, and peaceful use of nuclear technologies in Madagascar.
This text updates a legal framework nearly three decades old, which had become obsolete in the face of the rise of nuclear applications in several fields, notably medicine, agriculture, research, and the mining sector. It also aims to align Malagasy legislation with the standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The bill is based on safety, which aims to protect workers, the population, and the environment against risks related to nuclear technologies. Security focuses on protecting radioactive materials and sources against any unauthorized use. Safeguards ensure that these technologies remain exclusively dedicated to peaceful purposes.
The text also provides for the creation of a competent authority responsible for authorizing the use of nuclear materials, radioactive sources, and associated facilities, and for ensuring compliance with standards by sector actors.
The extractive sector is directly targeted: even the exploitation of ordinary mineral resources located in radioactive zones may fall under this mechanism, in order to protect the population and the environment.
