U23 AFCON: Friendly matches remain uncertain

The training camp for the thirty-five pre-selected local players from various regions began on September 12. While awaiting the official presentation of the staff and the preparation schedule, sessions are being held at different grounds in the capital depending on availability, including the Barea Annex in Mahamasina, Betongolo, or Iavoloha.

The Barea U23 team is preparing for the second round of the U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, following the withdrawal of the Comoros in the first round. They are set to face South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, with the first leg scheduled for November 9 and the return leg on November 17.

Two friendly matches and a closed training camp were initially planned. According to our sources, these are likely to be canceled due to a lack of funding. Boualam Mankour, who coached the Barea U23 in 2022, is expected to arrive in Madagascar in early October to train the local players for about ten days.

Herimanitra Rabeharisoa, a member of the staff, is expected to finalize a list of about twenty local players next week. Meanwhile, Hery Nirina Jacques Landry Ralison, known as ‘Nene’, and former Barea captain Johan Paul are also expected to propose a list of about twenty players based abroad.
