For its second edition, Malagasy Design Gaze brings together eleven designers under the theme ‘Re Dessin, Re Dessein’ (Redesign, Repurpose), standing at the crossroads of heritage, craftsmanship, and contemporary creation.
Reinventing without erasing the gestures of the past is the ambition of Malagasy Design Gaze, held from September 19 to October 2 at the Orange Digital Center in Soarano. Under the theme ‘Re Dessin, Re Dessein,’ the exhibition showcases how forms, materials, and techniques derived from Malagasy expertise can be reinterpreted to create new objects and uses.
Curated by Ihoby Lysiane Rabarijohn, with co-coordination by Malalatiana Ravelomaniraka, the event places special emphasis on the dialogue between designers and artisans. ‘I want to highlight the bond between the artisan and the designer to ensure transmission and sharing,’ explains Ihoby Lysiane Rabarijohn. Most of the eleven exhibitors work with local artisans, such as Georges Floret, who collaborates with the workshops of Analakely.
The wordplay on ‘dessin’ (drawing) and ‘dessein’ (purpose) refers to the idea of intention, project, and representation. The prefix ‘re-‘ evokes a return, but also transformation and renewal. The exhibition thus proposes a fresh look at existing elements rather than limiting itself to their reproduction. Objects and materials from craftsmanship are repurposed or reinterpreted, sometimes changing their function and perception. Heritage thus becomes a source of contemporary creation while maintaining a link with the artisans who master the traditional techniques.
Through these various artworks, the exhibition connects heritage, craftsmanship, and contemporary design, inviting the public to take a renewed look at Malagasy expertise.
