Madagascar is expanding its protected marine areas. Following the designation of Atimo Vata’e in Androy, Sorkay in Sainte Marie, and Tandavandriva in Nosy Be, Antongil Bay has now joined the list of Madagascar’s four new protected marine areas, bringing the total newly secured area to nearly 1.8 million hectares. The Great Island now boasts a total of 26 protected marine areas. The decree for the temporary protection of the zone was signed on September 16, and management measures have since been implemented on the ground.
Covering a total area of 416,165 hectares, the new Marine Protected Area (MPA) of Antongil Bay spans the regions of Analanjirofo and Sava, specifically affecting the districts of Antalaha, Maroantsetra, and Mananara Avaratra. It is notable for its importance as a breeding ground for humpback whales and serves as a vital source of livelihood for nearly 100,000 residents. Consultations were held with 14 villages prior to the decision, where residents expressed their commitment to protecting the area’s marine resources, according to the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development.
Following the signing of the temporary protection decree, management measures are now in effect, including the enforcement of sustainable fishing regulations. Local communities have been empowered to manage and directly monitor fishing activities through their associations. Priority will also be given to protecting sensitive habitats, with strengthened surveillance patrols conducted jointly by local communities and judicial police officers (OPJ).
The Antongil Bay Marine Protected Area will be managed by the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS). Local populations are also involved in its management, as equitable and responsible oversight of the zone helps secure their livelihoods. It is worth noting that MPAs play a crucial role in preserving marine ecosystems and sustaining the livelihoods of local populations.
