PRESIDENTIAL TRIP – Colonel Michaël Randrianirina intends to leverage his participation in the UN General Assembly to increase exchanges with other Heads of State

The President of the Refoundation is in New York. Colonel Michaël Randrianirina left Antananarivo this Monday to travel to New York to participate in the general debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. He stated his intention to use his presence at the UN to multiply exchanges with his counterparts and work on strengthening the country’s diplomatic relations.

“Once there, we will take the opportunity to discuss with countries with which we need to engage in order to ease the diplomatic and geopolitical situation around the world,” declared the President of the Refoundation before his departure at Ivato Airport. The general debate, which will be held from this Tuesday until September 28, is expected to bring together up to 130 heads of state and government, according to a statement from the presidency. 193 countries are represented at various levels, according to a UN statement.

The theme chosen for this 2026 session is “Restoring trust, managing transformation: a United Nations at the service of all.” The general debate constitutes the main political event of the high-level week of the General Assembly. It offers member states the opportunity to present their priorities and positions on major international issues. In parallel with public sessions, numerous bilateral and multilateral meetings are organized between leaders and delegations.

This will be a first for the President of the Refoundation, who came to power in October 2025. In September 2025, Madagascar was represented at the general debate in New York by the ousted president Andry Rajoelina. The latter had said he returned discreetly to the country a few days after delivering his speech at the UN podium, on the eve of the first day of the demonstrations that eventually led to his ouster from power.
