Two ensembles, two countries, but one shared stage. Madagascar’s Quatuor Squad and Germany’s Lanner Ensemble held their closing concert on Friday evening at La Teinturerie in Ampasanimalo, as part of the Madagascar Mozarteum program. Following an initial joint performance at the Institut français de Madagascar, this second encounter extended their musical exchange before a large and enthusiastic audience.
The evening featured a rich and varied repertoire, including Béla Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s String Quartet in G major KV 156, Joseph Lanner’s Neue Wiener Ländler, op. 1, Joseph Haydn’s String Quartet in C major, op. 33 no. 3, and Lanner’s Tango.
Formed in 2016 by four childhood friends passionate about string instruments, Quatuor Squad initially focused on 18th-century classical, baroque, and romantic repertoires. The name “Squad” reflects the camaraderie and cohesion among its members. Over the years, the group has expanded its musical universe to include pop, variety, and traditional Malagasy rhythms, while maintaining a central focus on classical music.
Founded in 1997 by Tibor Jonas, the Lanner Ensemble is dedicated to reviving works from the Viennese classical era and the Biedermeier period. Under the direction of Tibor Jonas, the group upholds the tradition of Joseph Lanner. For this visit to Madagascar, the Lanner Ensemble featured Philipp Jonas and Tibor Jonas on violin, and Cornelia Kraft on cello, with Malagasy musician Hervais Mihamina Rabarison joining as a special guest on viola.
