AGRICULTURE – A hybrid rice seed production center to be established in Madagascar in collaboration with China, according to the Prime Minister

Madagascar aims to produce hybrid rice seeds locally to reduce reliance on imports. Following an official mission to China, Prime Minister Mamitiana Rajaonarison announced the establishment of a hybrid rice seed production center on the Great Island as part of bilateral cooperation. The goal is to produce seeds locally for farmers while conducting research on varieties adapted to Madagascar’s specific agricultural conditions.

Through this new center, the Malagasy authorities intend to lower the cost of hybrid seeds for local producers. “By producing locally, the price of seeds will be more accessible to farmers,” emphasized Mamitiana Rajaonarison. The Prime Minister, speaking upon his arrival at Ivato International Airport, added that the initiative also aims to “create jobs and produce a large quantity of seeds.”

The project will combine Chinese research expertise with existing rice varieties in the country. The cooperation will leverage work conducted in China on hybrid rice. During his visit to Hunan Province, the Prime Minister toured research plots at the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences, where two Malagasy researchers are currently participating in research projects.

According to the Prime Minister, the hybrid rice varieties observed in China can yield up to 15 tons per hectare under certain conditions, compared to the current average of 2 to 3 tons per hectare in Madagascar. He also highlighted varieties adapted to specific conditions, including land less favorable for irrigation.

The hybrid rice seed production center project is part of broader discussions held during the Prime Minister’s official mission to China. According to his office, the mission covered several sectors, including agriculture, technology and digital development, transport, scientific research, meteorology, satellite technology, and environmental protection.
