The Malagasy Fanandroana (traditional astrology/calendar) is embracing digital technology. The Centre 3,14, led by Eris Rabedaoro, has introduced the mobile application Oana. Developed in Madagascar, the app is designed to provide consultations on the traditional Malagasy calendar using artificial intelligence that runs directly on the user’s phone.
Oana combines knowledge related to Fanandroana, including traditions passed down by the Mpanandro (traditional astrologers), with AI technology. The application aims to make this knowledge accessible for daily use through various consultation and analysis tools.
To build its knowledge base, the Centre 3,14 team conducted months of research across Madagascar. This included analyzing historical documents, Sorabe manuscripts, teachings from Antemoro and Sakalava scholars, and field-collected geographical data. Meetings with holders of this traditional knowledge were also organized.
“This scientific and cultural approach has a clear goal: to make Fanandroana accessible to everyone in daily life, while valuing and respecting the expertise of traditional astrologers (Mpanandro),” explained Eris Rabedaoro, Director General of Centre 3,14, during the official launch in Ambatonakanga this Thursday.
The application offers two modes of use: one for the general public with simplified consultations, and another for users seeking deeper analysis of the various components of Fanandroana. Key features include the “Anio” section for daily guidance, the “Daty” personalized calendar using a color-coded system, and a 3D spatial analysis module for determining orientations. The “Hahomby” (meaning “to succeed”) section provides consultations for projects related to health, travel, real estate, family, agriculture, and livestock.
The technology is powered by Lumina, an AI developed by Centre 3,14 engineers. A key feature highlighted by the team is that the AI operates locally on the smartphone without requiring an internet connection or GPS, ensuring data privacy and high performance.
