The Diana region has launched the Irema project, an ecosystem restoration initiative deployed across five regions of Madagascar, with environmental governance as one of its key pillars.
Currently, the Diana region is committed to restoring ecosystems and mobilizing green investments. It officially hosted the launch of the Irema project, an initiative designed to strengthen investments for ecosystem restoration in Madagascar. Deployed in five regions of the country, the project focuses on improved environmental governance, scientific research, the development of the carbon market, and the mobilization of the private sector.
The project is structured around several strategic axes. It aims to establish and operationalize national environmental governance mechanisms while strengthening scientific research to provide reliable data for public decision-making. The project also intends to contribute to the second objective of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which is dedicated to the restoration of degraded ecosystems. Developing and structuring the carbon market is also a priority, as is strengthening partnerships with the private sector.
Through these partnerships, it aims to promote the creation of industrial forests and the development of environmentally friendly alternative solutions. The goal is to make ecosystem restoration not only an ecological imperative but also an opportunity for economic development and income generation for local communities.
In the Diana region, project interventions will focus on the Irodo-Antsiranana-II watershed. Two actors will ensure implementation on the ground: Madagascar National Parks (MNP), which will handle activities within the Montagne d’Ambre National Park, and the organization ‘Hay Tany’, which will operate in areas outside the protected zone. A total of seven communes are covered by the former, while five communes fall under the latter’s scope.
This configuration explains the presence of several representatives from local community groups (VOI) at the launch ceremony held at the Botovasoa Center. Their involvement is a decisive factor in the success of restoration actions, the preservation of natural resources, and the sustainability of the project’s results.
The launch ceremony also brought together several dignitaries and representatives of relevant institutions. The Member of Parliament for Antsiranana-II, Dr. Raymond, mayors of the beneficiary communes, civil and military authorities, and members of the IREMA team attended the event. The Diana region was represented by its Secretary General, Daudet Karany Andriamahatoly, demonstrating the importance the regional institution places on initiatives aimed at reconciling ecosystem restoration, local economic development, and community resilience.
