Tensions have escalated between the operators of the Fasan’ny Karana bus station and the Ministry of Transport and Meteorology. Yesterday, operators staged a protest on National Road 7 (RN7) to oppose their relocation to the new Amoronakona bus terminal.
The protest in Ambatofotsy resulted in a fatality. A demonstrator succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital. While protesters blame police gunfire, security forces claim the injuries were caused by stone-throwing during the dispersal of the crowd using tear gas. Several arrests were made as authorities worked to restore order.
The confrontation paralyzed local life in Ambatofotsy, with residents barricading themselves indoors and shops closing due to the chaos. Protesters blocked the road with tree trunks, stones, and burning tires, causing massive traffic jams for hours.
Despite previous attempts by traffic police to negotiate and advise against dangerous transport practices, the protesters remained defiant, stating that blocking the RN7 was their last resort to prevent the permanent closure of Fasan’ny Karana, which they fear will lead to widespread job losses.
The Ministry of Transport has maintained a firm stance, noting that while historical merchants at Fasan’ny Karana may remain subject to private land agreements, all public transport vehicles must relocate to Amoronakona. Minister Herizo Ramanambola confirmed that there will be no turning back, and the site is officially closed to all bus arrivals and departures as of today.
