The youth corners at the technical and vocational high schools in Mienake, Mananjary, and Manakara have been equipped with leisure and gaming materials. This is the result of a partnership between the Ministry of Technical Education and Vocational Training, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the Norwegian Consul.
“Today’s youth lack leisure activities. To prevent them from hanging out in bars or engaging in gambling, it is better to create a ‘youth corner’ where they can find everything they need to focus and thrive,” stated Todisoa Andriamampandry, Minister of Technical Education and Vocational Training, during the equipment handover ceremony yesterday.
This initiative was motivated by a special focus on young girls. In Madagascar, approximately 32% of girls aged 15 to 19 have already begun their reproductive lives, leading to consequences such as dropping out of school and the inability to acquire necessary skills through technical education and vocational training.
The donation will directly benefit 1,500 young learners across the three institutions. “The idea behind this project is to ensure that young girls, just like boys, remain within the education system so they can acquire the necessary skills to enter the workforce,” said Ngoy Kishimba, acting representative of the UNFPA. The Ministry of Technical Education and Vocational Training aims to expand these youth corners across the entire country.
