WEATHER – Hailstorms strike Atsimondrano

On Saturday afternoon, the ground and rooftops from the south of the Analamanga region to the Vakinankaratra region were covered in a thick layer of hail. Heavy hailstorms struck these areas.

“A violent wind blew, followed by hail for about ten minutes. The ice pellets were over 1 cm in diameter,” says Gabriel Rakotomalala, a resident of Anosibe. While the ice melted within minutes in that neighborhood and in Anosizato, it was denser in Antanifotsy and Ambohibary, taking much longer to disappear. “Our crops, which we were counting on, were destroyed in a few minutes,” laments Tiantsoa, a farmer.

This hailstorm was caused by an area of instability at high altitude, according to Lovandrainy Ratovoarisoa Andriambelomasinasolo, a forecaster at the General Directorate of Meteorology. He did not specify whether this was transitional rain between winter and the rainy season. In any case, at the start of this week, winter weather will return to the Central Highlands, according to meteorological forecasts.

“Drizzle is expected in the east of Analamanga. A drop in temperatures is forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday, particularly in the Highlands,” indicates Lahatra Mampionona, a forecaster. Maximum temperatures in Analamanga are expected to be 21°C on Tuesday and 19°C on Wednesday.
