Electoral governance was at the heart of the meeting between the President of the Refoundation, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, and the Vice-President of the European Commission, Kaja Kallas, on Friday in Brussels. According to the Presidency of the Refoundation, the European official expressed the European Union’s willingness to support Madagascar in this sector. The Malagasy head of state, for his part, expressed Madagascar’s wish that this support include both electoral expertise and financial resources.
The meeting with Kaja Kallas was an opportunity for the President of the Refoundation to emphasize that Madagascar is currently working on electoral governance reforms. This process, he noted, is taking place in parallel with the national consultation involving grassroots communities in the fokontany before reaching the national level. He also recalled the main lines of the Refoundation’s schedule, which had already been presented to the Southern African Development Community (SADC). This schedule notably provides for a presidential election before the end of 2027.
In addition to the electoral issue, the President of the Refoundation and the Vice-President of the European Commission reviewed the main points of cooperation between Madagascar and Europe. Both parties reiterated that the European Union is Madagascar’s main partner in terms of non-repayable grants. They also discussed ongoing projects funded by the European Union, including the rehabilitation of the RN6 national road on the section connecting Ambanja to Antsiranana. The head of state emphasized that this road section should be inaugurated soon.
