The Ministry of National Education is preparing public schools for the abolition of traditional academic series. Private schools are expressing reluctance.
The traditional A, C, and D series could disappear for good. “According to the plan established by the ministry, there will no longer be A, C, and D series starting this school year. This plan stipulates that there will no longer be a baccalaureate for these series,” a source from the Ministry of National Education indicated this weekend.
These streams will give way to the Literary (L), Scientific (S), and Organization-Society-Economy (OSE) series. These new series have been integrated into the baccalaureate exams since the 2021 session. “The development of this new curriculum dates back to 2018 and has been tested in several schools across the island. The time has now come to implement it,” the source continued.
The Ministry of National Education began informing education stakeholders of this decision last week and providing them with the necessary guidelines. However, private schools are showing reluctance. “Administrative and pedagogical start-ups have already been carried out, including the annual distribution of school curricula. While the start of the school year is scheduled for Monday, September 7, 2026, the announcement of the curriculum change comes suddenly and unexpectedly,” stated a joint notice from private schools following the information session held on Friday, September 4, at the ministry in Anosy.
Private institutions insist that they are not yet ready to implement this reform. They believe it is necessary to improve the content of the curricula as well as the coefficients.
“These coefficients are likely to mislead students due to the lack of qualified teachers. Added to this is the unavailability of teacher training modules, as the state is clearly not able to ensure the training of all staff in private institutions,” the private sector statement also indicated.
The coefficients are particularly high for the main subjects of the new series. They are 6 in mathematics, physics-chemistry, and life and earth sciences for the S series, compared to 4 for certain subjects in the D series and 5 for the C series, for example.
Public sector teachers also believe that an adaptation period is necessary before permanently abolishing the traditional series. “Several public and private institutions have not yet tested the new curriculum. Yet, some modules of the old curriculum have been removed while others have been added. We must start from the ‘Première’ (11th grade) to properly prepare future candidates,” explains a mathematics teacher.
The ministry says it remains open to discussions with all stakeholders involved. A source from the ministry indicates that a statement on the subject will be made this week.
