Preparations for the relocation of transporters from the Fasan’ny Karàna station are underway, but transport cooperatives remain divided on the issue.
Some transporters wish to remain at Fasan’ny Karàna, while others are planning to move to the new Amoronakona bus station. These conflicting positions follow a 15-day ultimatum issued by the Ministry of Transport and Meteorology for operators at Fasan’ny Karàna to relocate.
“Of course we will move to the new station. The location suits us due to its proximity,” said the president of a cooperative connecting Antananarivo to the southeastern regions. A meeting held on Wednesday by the Ministry helped clarify doubts for those still hesitant to leave.
The primary concern remains passenger accessibility. Many fear the station is too far from the city center, where most passengers—primarily traders—conduct their business in areas like Anosibe, Behoririka, or Andravoahangy. Since its opening in June, the station has remained largely deserted.
The Ministry has assured that shuttle services will be established to connect Amoronakona to the city center, and urban train frequencies will be improved. Currently, three daily departures from Soarano are available. The Ministry also plans to manage station bays efficiently to ensure quality service for both domestic and foreign passengers.
Conversely, some transporters, such as Vincent de Paul Razafimanantsoa, argue that passengers themselves are reluctant to travel to the distant Amoronakona site. Meanwhile, some passengers have expressed interest in the new station, blaming the cooperatives for the lack of service. Razafimanantsoa insists they will not leave Fasan’ny Karàna, citing that the new facility is ill-suited for passengers, particularly those from Tolagnaro who often need to sleep in the station bays. They have requested an audience with the President of the Republic and proposed developing a site at Androndrakely for transporters serving the southern route.
