HEALTH – Traditional medicine stands the test of time

Herbal teas, ‘raokandro’ (traditional Malagasy medicine), and therapeutic massages continue to be part of the healthcare practices for some Malagasy people. These practices remain in use to alleviate various ailments and are also available at several points of sale.

In Ambohimahitsy, Veroniaina explains that the use of these practices stems from knowledge passed down through previous generations. ‘It was the elderly in our community who taught us this way of healing. We continue to use it when we are sick,’ she testifies.

Demand is also evident among sellers of medicinal plants. George notes that many people come to buy leaves used as remedies. ‘Many people stop by to buy leaves intended for use as medicine. They buy them at an affordable price and take them home to treat themselves,’ he explains.

In the capital, several places offer Malagasy ‘raokandro’ in various forms. Companies are also marketing products based on medicinal plants. On some packaging, several diseases or symptoms are mentioned among the indications for use.

The presence of these products on the market thus testifies to the persistence of traditional medicine in the habits of some consumers. For many, their use is based on family practices and knowledge transmitted over generations.

‘However, the use of traditional remedies remains a practice that requires caution. The use of a product presented as medicinal does not necessarily guarantee its effectiveness against a disease. In case of persistent symptoms or serious illness, the advice of a healthcare professional remains necessary,’ emphasizes the interviewed doctor.
