Festivities have been organized to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Alliance Française de Toliara. The history of the institution and the sharing of culture are at the heart of this celebration.
The celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Alliance Française de Toliara began yesterday. In his speech, the current director, Franck David, retraced the path taken by the institution, which he described as “solid” and rich in numerous experiences.
“The Alliance Française de Toliara is not only recognized for its expertise in teaching the French language, which allows learners to better understand the world. It brings together an entire community. Cultural enthusiasts, artists, local and visiting creators, young people, generations of children, and memories have made its history,” he emphasized.
The Alliance Française de Toliara has some four thousand members. It records about a hundred events, two thousand French language learners, and some ten thousand visitors and spectators each year. “These are fifty years of creation, meetings, shows, posters, exhibitions, conferences, and the promotion of culture,” added the director.
Yesterday’s celebration coincided with the launch of the fourth edition of the “Vakok’Arts” festival. The program included demonstrations by Madagascar Capoeira Toliara, performances by the Children’s Dance Workshop, concerts by artists from the Tremplin stage, as well as performances by slam poets. The official fiftieth-anniversary ceremony was followed by shows from the group Asco Music and Monika Njava.
Celebrating this fiftieth anniversary also means looking back on the journey traveled and paying tribute to those who have contributed to the institution’s history. Seventeen people, including teachers, volunteers, artists, and administrative staff members, were rewarded.
“The Alliance Française de Toliara helped me discover the world. I have been passionate about the French language since I was a child, and I spent twenty-six years of my life teaching it within the institution. I am proud to have transmitted so much wealth and knowledge,” reacted Wilfrid Menara Astiana, a teacher and pedagogical coordinator now retired, who was among those rewarded. Accordionist Jean Piso was also honored.
“It is a human story, made of encounters, transmission, and commitment. The coming years will be made of new creations and new collaborations, because an institution is never built alone,” declared the director of the Alliance Française.
Recognized as being of public utility, the association also plays a role as a space for dialogue and cultural exchange. “I am proud to see that the Alliance Française de Toliara continues to invest in its missions and in the promotion of the diversity of Malagasy and French cultures. The goal is to be at this crossroads of education, teaching, and cultures,” detailed Franck David.
“The Alliance Française de Toliara is lucky to have Vakok’Arts, a stage equipped with complete instruments and made available to artists. But the Alliance is a place for everyone, not just for a part of the population. Everyone must be able to find their place there, and the goal will not be reached until that is the case,” concluded the director.
