A young woman lost her life in Tanjombato after being pushed into the river by thieves she had attempted to confront. The National Police have launched an investigation.
The tragedy occurred yesterday morning around 7:15 AM near the Ambohimanatrika railway bridge in the commune of Tanjombato. Residents gathered as rescuers recovered the body of the young woman from the Ikopa River.
The victim, approximately 22 years old and originally from Faratsiho, was working in the capital. She was accompanied by her 15-year-old sister when they were attacked around 8:30 PM the previous evening while walking across the bridge. According to initial reports, she resisted the theft of her phone and pursued the perpetrators before being pushed into the river. Her body was recovered the next morning by Tanjombato divers in the Saropody neighborhood.
Local residents confirmed the account, noting that the area is dangerous and frequently plagued by security incidents. While 100,000 ariary was found in the victim’s pocket and returned to a relative, the community has expressed frustration over persistent insecurity and the perceived lack of police responsiveness. Authorities have intensified efforts to apprehend the suspects.
