The State shows its gratitude. Three researchers committed to environmental protection were decorated on Thursday at the Iavoloha State Palace. They are Professor Jonah Ratsimbazafy and two American researchers, Dr. Russell Alan Mittermeier and Professor Steven Michael Goodman.
The Malagasy State elevated Professor Jonah Ratsimbazafy to the rank of Grand Officer of the National Order in recognition of his work and efforts in the field of biodiversity. As President of the Madagascar Primate Study and Research Group (GERP), he has worked for 30 years in the research and conservation of natural heritage, contributing to Madagascar’s international reputation.
A renowned Malagasy researcher in the field of biodiversity, he is the first Malagasy and African to be elected president of the International Primatological Society (IPS). He has dedicated his research to the protection of lemurs and endemic species of Madagascar. He is also the discoverer of one of the smallest lemur species, the Microcebus jonahi.
Dr. Russell Alan Mittermeier is a biodiversity expert and researcher, specializing in Madagascar’s unique natural wealth. He was a key player in advocating for the mobilization of funding for the protection of endangered species and national parks in Madagascar. He notably participated in the establishment of the Beza Mahafaly protected area and the implementation of the first “Environmental Action Plan” in Madagascar.
Professor Steven Michael Goodman is a researcher and biologist. For 37 years, he has worked in the research and conservation of Madagascar’s unique biodiversity. As a lecturer and researcher at several Malagasy universities, he has contributed to the discovery of more than 90 endemic animal and plant species on the island. He has published 770 scientific articles and written 30 books mainly devoted to the natural heritage and protected areas of Madagascar.
The two American researchers were elevated to the rank of Commander of the National Order. “They have dedicated their entire youth to Madagascar,” testifies Professor Jonah Ratsimbazafy. “The results of the work carried out by these researchers are considerable and recognized worldwide,” indicates the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development. “It is therefore just and legitimate that the current State expresses its gratitude to them,” it concludes.
