Official celebration. As announced by the President of the Refoundation, Madagascar will officially mark the birth of the Malagasy Republic in a solemn manner this year. The ceremony for the 68th anniversary will be held on October 14, 2026, in Anahidrano, in the Antsohihy district, Sofia region.
The choice of this location, closely linked to Philibert Tsiranana, the first president of the Malagasy Republic, brings back to the forefront a historical date often less present in collective memory than June 26. On October 14, 1958, the Malagasy Republic was officially proclaimed, two years before Madagascar’s independence. Both dates represent distinct stages in the construction of the Malagasy state.
Preparations for the celebration were presented on Tuesday during a press conference held in Anosy. The Minister of Territorial Planning and Land Services, General Lylison René De Rolland, also a former head of the Sofia region, accompanied by deputies elected in the region and several government members, detailed the main outlines of the event.
The choice of Anahidrano is explained in particular by its link to Philibert Tsiranana, who was from the Sofia region and was the first president of the Malagasy Republic. According to General Lylison René De Rolland, October 14 had already been celebrated there under the First Republic. “October 14 was celebrated there in the past, under the First Republic. Despite the political changes that followed, the tradition of commemoration has been maintained there,” he indicated.
The President of the Refoundation of the Republic, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, also emphasized, according to the authorities, the importance of October 14 in the national memory. The celebration is intended to contribute to making this period of Malagasy history known to new generations.
