In Madagascar, many children of former rally drivers are following in their parents’ footsteps. For Tahina Razafinjoelina, the 2018 national champion, rally is more than just a sport; it is a tool for personal growth. “The result is not always the most important thing for us; rally makes us more confident and helps us overcome our fear,” he explained.
After a break, Tahina, a member of the ASACM club, returned to the circuit this season alongside his daughter, Fitia. Driving a Subaru, the duo finished fifth overall and won the mixed category at the 19th Boeny Holiday Rally. Fitia, already a karting champion, was also recognized as the best young female co-driver.
Tahina emphasizes the safety of professional rallying compared to illegal street racing, noting the advanced safety equipment like six-point harnesses. He also shared that his younger daughter, 18, will soon join him for upcoming rounds. At 48, Tahina considers this might be his final season, encouraging the next generation of Malagasy drivers who have shown great potential.
Outside of racing, 20-year-old Fitia is pursuing a Master’s degree in computer science. Tahina stresses that while rally is a shared family passion, education and work remain the top priorities.
