A mission composed of representatives from the African Union, the United Nations, and SADC is expected in Madagascar this week to prepare a political dialogue framework ahead of the elections.
If the situation remains unchanged, international mediators will arrive in Madagascar this week to attempt to resolve political disputes in the country. In addition to delegations from the African Union and the United Nations, envoys from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) will join them to develop a political framework before the elections.
“Their goal is to prepare a political dialogue to resolve differences of opinion and to examine the various proposals to achieve this,” a source close to the matter stated yesterday. In mid-July, the international community announced consultations aimed at preparing for this dialogue and the political process in the country.
The African Union’s Special Representative for Political Affairs, Mohamed Idriss Farah, and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Africa, Parfait Onanga-Anyanga, led the delegation, which gathered the aspirations of political forces and actors met during a week of consultations.
“The objective is to reach a political agreement aimed at modifying or reforming the mechanisms to organize elections that are acceptable to all and in a safe environment,” states the press release from the United Nations (UN) published at the end of their visit to Madagascar. During this second visit to Madagascar, SADC envoys will also provide their support to the delegation.
The SADC summit, held last week in South Africa, concluded with a statement from member states expressing their willingness to support various initiatives aimed at reaching a common political agreement to settle the country’s affairs. The Head of State, Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, stated that the goal of this political dialogue was “to help the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) organize peaceful and transparent elections.”
