AMBATONDRAZAKA – Affected farming households prepare for recovery

Farmers affected by Cyclone Gezani are beginning to resume their activities. Four hundred households are receiving financial support to help them cope with the aftermath of the disaster.

Four hundred vulnerable agricultural households in Ambatondrazaka are benefiting from support of approximately 490 million ariary (100,000 euros) to address the consequences of Cyclone Gezani. The funding, which began in May 2026, is intended to help affected families cover their immediate needs and gradually resume their agricultural activities. Households that suffered significant crop losses are among the beneficiaries.

The official handover of the check took place in the presence of the German Ambassador, Oliver Knoerich. “This sum symbolizes the strengthening of cooperation between Germany and Madagascar,” he stated. This support is part of the humanitarian cooperation between the two countries.

“In total, 400 households are benefiting from this support. It is the result of the efforts we are making to accompany the affected families,” indicated Aly Arlin Rivoarimalala, National President of the Malagasy Red Cross.

The Ambatondrazaka district was targeted due to its importance in national rice production, as well as the agricultural losses recorded following the floods. “As a rice granary and a region with high agricultural production, the Ambatondrazaka district has benefited from this strategic targeted support,” explained Fara Rakotondrazanany, an official from the Malagasy Red Cross.

The aid primarily concerns households with limited income, those whose food reserves are exhausted, and families who have suffered significant losses.

Training sessions are also planned to strengthen their capacities and facilitate the resumption of their activities. Monitoring of the beneficiaries will then allow for an evaluation of the intervention’s effects.
