After several years spent between Madagascar and France, Dina Mialinelina has returned with renewed energy. This Friday at La Teinturerie, the artist reconnected with the Malagasy public for her first concert since becoming a finalist for the 2025 RFI Discovery Prize. It was a highly anticipated return, marked by strong audience engagement and a repertoire consisting entirely of her own compositions.
The repertoire focused primarily on her original works. Among them, “Soamiranga” and “Rakemba” held a special place for the audience. “Soamiranga” addresses women’s emancipation in society, while “Rakemba,” which evokes a white-haired grandmother, highlights an elderly woman whose “spirit remains very young.” These tracks particularly captured the audience’s attention, with some spectators even requesting multiple encores.
Through these creations, Dina seeks to create a dialogue between Malagasy roots and contemporary songwriting. Her style combines elements of Malagasy music with modern sounds, without abandoning the language and stories of her country. “I always continue to write stories in Malagasy, even when I travel around the world,” she affirms.
On stage, Dina Mialinelina was accompanied by her band: Harty Andriambelo on bass, Kevy Rakotoarivelo on drums, Julie Ratefy on keyboards, and Tsanta Nasandratra on backing vocals. On guitar and vocals, the artist presented a universe built around Malagasy music, modernity, and an energy she says she developed further through her experiences abroad.
“I have enriched and acquired a lot of experience,” she explains. Based in France since December 2023, Dina has been involved in numerous artistic projects. Abroad, she does not limit herself to music: she acts, dances, and also writes for the theater. These diverse practices now nourish her stage presence. She specifically mentions the experience of traveling festivals, which allowed her to develop “a stronger, more fiery energy.”
This evolution was felt during her performance at La Teinturerie. The audience, composed of different generations, particularly those aged 30 and over, participated enthusiastically. “There was happiness, there was light,” says Dina, who also noted that “everyone was dancing.” For her, returning to her country after several experiences abroad has a special dimension: “It is different to come back home.”
Dina Mialinelina discovered music at the age of 17 with musician Mamy Ralaivita. Self-taught, she joined the Ry Mialy company of Mialy Rajhonson in 2008, where she remained for twelve years as an actress and singer. She then explored rock, jazz, French variety, and opera.
