The number of candidates who obtained their baccalaureate diploma has dropped significantly. The “Bac Malio” approach introduced by the University of Toliara is cited as one of the reasons.
Disappointment for some, cheers for others. Out of the 29,144 candidates who took the baccalaureate exams across the former Toliara province, 11,427 succeeded, representing a success rate of 39.21%. As official results were released yesterday morning at various exam centers in the “City of the Sun,” both smiling and unhappy faces were seen. “Many of us didn’t make it. The success rate is too low, even lower than last year,” said Aldine, a terminale A2 student at a private college in Toliara.
In 2025, the success rate was 43.14%, already down from 63.01% in 2024. This year, the A2 series recorded the lowest success rate at only 37.15%, while the C series reached 69.09% and the OSE series 66.25%. These were followed by the A1 series (59.95%), L series (55.05%), D series (39.24%), and S series (38.07%). Technical education recorded a very satisfactory success rate of 71.10%.
The youngest candidate this year, aged 10, obtained her A2 series baccalaureate diploma with an average of 11/20. The oldest candidate, aged 60, did not show up for the exams on July 20.
Since last year, the University of Toliara has promoted the “Bac Malio” approach, a term in the local dialect meaning “clean” and “transparent.” “The baccalaureate exam throughout the former Toliara province will be surrounded by measures to fight all forms of fraud. We apply zero tolerance to any attempt at fraud and corruption,” warned the President of the University of Toliara, Francis Veriza. These measures include searching candidates’ bags at the start of each exam, allowing only pens, ID cards, and exam summons into the room.
In rural areas, some parents have gone as far as threatening center heads to ensure their children could take the exams and obtain their diplomas. A few years ago, fictitious candidates inflated the official numbers, disrupting the entire exam process.
Regarding teachers, last year was marked by the sale of exam subjects for up to 1.5 million ariary. Consequently, measures were significantly reinforced this year. Seventy-five candidates will face disciplinary councils. The deliberation threshold was set at 9.75/20. However, a minor issue was revealed: the list of admitted candidates with their grades leaked 12 hours before the official release of results yesterday, August 20.
