SUPPLY – Construction of the Amoronakona water station progresses

The construction site of the future Amoronakona water treatment plant is taking shape. According to a technician, the foundation for this new infrastructure is complete. “We first came here at the end of 2025 for the groundbreaking ceremony. Today, we can see real progress on the site. In six months, the 4-hectare fencing and the embankment work have been completed, and all preparations are in place. The project is progressing well,” said the Minister of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene, Dr. Minosoa Razafindrianiaina, during a site visit yesterday.

The site fencing is 100% complete, while platform backfilling has reached 85%. Site installation is 60% finished. Design studies are 80% complete, while execution studies have begun and show a progress rate of 25%.

In parallel, storage infrastructure is advancing on the heights of Ambohibe, where a new 1,500 m³ reservoir will be installed. Soil preparation is nearly finished: backfilling is 100% complete, site installation is at 90%, and the pouring of the blinding concrete under the raft foundation has reached 50%. Design and execution studies show progress rates of 90% and 50%, respectively.

Finally, the component related to transporting treated water to Iavoloha, Ambohibe, and Analamahitsy is taking its first steps. This 23-kilometer network is entering its operational phase with the development of execution files, the ordering of the first batch of pipes and accessories, and the preparation of technical files required to obtain rights-of-way.

The Jirama Water III project, funded by the European Union and the European Investment Bank, represents a solution to the water crisis in Antananarivo. “The planned supply of 50,000 m³ will help bridge a large part of the current deficit,” the Minister emphasized. The station is expected to be operational by the end of 2027.
