At least 36 people were treated at the Joseph Ravoahangy Andrianavalona (HJRA) Hospital in Ampefiloha over the weekend following food poisoning after consuming ‘compose’ and sandwiches purchased from a shop in Ambatomaro. The shop has been temporarily closed, and samples of the oil used to make mayonnaise have been sent to the laboratory for testing.
According to the Ministry of Trade and Consumption, the victims fell ill after eating at the shop on Friday evening, with symptoms appearing on Saturday morning. While many were initially discharged, some had to return to the hospital due to persistent symptoms.
Yolandine Nambohoe Venon, Director of Consumer Protection (DPC) at the Ministry, stated that 33 people arrived on Saturday. Most were discharged after treatment, except for two who had complications, which were attributed to pre-existing conditions rather than the food poisoning itself.
The Ministry’s team inspected the site, but no remnants of the consumed food were available for testing. Consequently, the oil used for mayonnaise was sampled and sent to the ASCQSDA laboratory under the Ministry of Public Health. Results are expected within 72 hours, and investigations into the exact cause of the incident are ongoing.
