Heavy rains in Ambovombe, Tsihombe, and Antanimora in the Androy region have caused significant livestock losses. According to the Ministry of Livestock, at least 50 cattle have died due to the persistent downpours. Authorities are currently conducting assessments, and the death toll is expected to rise.
In addition to cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry have also perished. The Head of the Androy Region, Dr. Djiby Firavoa, estimates that the total number of dead livestock could exceed one hundred. The prolonged rainfall, which lasted from Thursday, August 13, until Saturday morning, left animals unable to graze and exposed to extreme cold, leading to their deaths.
A joint task force has been established to monitor the situation, conduct censuses, and provide medicine and supplements to surviving animals. The Ministry of Livestock has allocated 3 million Ariary to support these efforts and is urging farmers to improve shelter and care for their livestock during the rainy season.
