FOOTBALL – Cameroon wins its first Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title against Malawi

On Sunday in Rabat, Cameroon secured its first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title by defeating Malawi 3-0, in a historic final between two teams that had never reached this stage of the competition before.

The Indomitable Lionesses quickly took control of the match. Ngah Manga opened the scoring with a header in the 20th minute from a cross on the left, before Naomi Eto doubled the lead in the 30th minute with a cross-shot following a corner. Ngah Manga added her second goal of the match during first-half stoppage time (45+3), also with a header.

Cameroon, which had not initially qualified for this edition, benefited from the expansion of the tournament from 12 to 16 teams decided in November. The Cameroonian side confirmed their status as favorites throughout the tournament after finishing top of their group.

Notably, they eliminated Nigeria in the quarter-finals (1-0), ending the run of the most successful team in WAFCON history, which holds ten titles in thirteen editions. In the semi-finals, Cameroon then knocked out the host nation, Morocco, after a penalty shootout (0-0, 3-1).

Malawi, ranked 153rd in the FIFA rankings, was competing in its first-ever Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The ‘Scorchers’ achieved a historic run to the final, becoming the first team to reach the title match in their debut appearance since the competition’s inception in 1998.

The Malawian team was deprived of its main offensive weapons. Sisters Tabitha and Temwa Chawinga, who had scored nine of Malawi’s twelve goals before the final, were contained by the Cameroonian defense. Nevertheless, Temwa Chawinga finished the tournament as the top scorer with five goals.

With this victory, the Indomitable Lionesses write their name into the WAFCON record books for the first time, bringing Cameroon a new major title on the African football stage.
