Local emergency numbers are now available. The Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development has released the phone numbers of its regional officials to facilitate the reporting of fires and accelerate intervention coordination. This measure is part of prevention efforts against bushfires as the high-risk period approaches, with a peak typically observed in October.
The prevention campaign, which has been underway for several months, is currently intensifying across the regions. According to an authorized source at the ministry, teams are strengthening awareness-raising activities among populations in fire-prone areas.
Local radio stations are also being mobilized to broadcast prevention messages. Regional authorities are urged to enhance mobilization and coordination upon receiving reports. The framework involves prefects, regional heads, security forces, the National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC), as well as the ministries in charge of Agriculture and Livestock.
This preparation comes against a backdrop of widespread fires in Madagascar. Approximately six million hectares are burned annually in the country, including nearly 300,000 hectares of forest areas. The economic losses linked to these fires are estimated at around 450 million dollars per year.
Pasture and agricultural fires are among the main sources of blazes, according to the ministry. Awareness efforts also focus on agricultural and pastoral practices that are likely to cause bushfires.
The peak of the fire season has not yet been reached. Some outbreaks have already been reported, notably in the Isalo protected area. By disseminating the contact details of its regional officials and strengthening awareness actions, the ministry aims to intervene before the multiplication of fire outbreaks and reduce reporting and response times.
