The role of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) as a guarantor of peace, constitutional order, and democratic governance in the region has been reaffirmed. Decisions made by these bodies, particularly those of the Troika of the Organ on Politics, Defense, and Security Cooperation, are expected to strengthen the organization’s role in upholding peace and constitutional order, stated Enock Kanzingeni Chihana, Second Vice-President of Malawi, representing President Arthur Peter Mutharika, during the opening of the Troika Summit in Durban, South Africa, on Sunday.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Troika leaders called for continued efforts toward stability, dialogue, and democratic governance. The Malawian Second Vice-President emphasized the importance of unity, dialogue, and collective action in addressing regional challenges. Highlighting political and security challenges in parts of Southern Africa, including Madagascar, SADC Executive Secretary Elias Magosi underscored the diplomatic efforts underway to address them. Preventive diplomacy, mediation, and dialogue were presented as the primary instruments for managing political and security crises.
The summit also featured the handover of the Organ’s chairmanship from Tanzania to Eswatini. Outgoing chair, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, passed the responsibility to King Mswati III of Eswatini, the incoming chair of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defense, and Security Cooperation. Both leaders were represented at the Troika Summit by their respective Ministers of Defense.
