A flurry of tanker activity is underway at the port of Toamasina. The arrival of two tankers carrying petroleum products has necessitated a reorganization of operations at the oil terminal of Madagascar’s largest port. The vessel Sunda 1, carrying fuel primarily for Jirama’s thermal power plants, and the Torm Eva, tasked with ensuring a steady supply to the national market, must take turns at the quay to unload their cargo.
The Sunda 1 had to be “temporarily shifted to clear the berth” to allow the Torm Eva to dock and “proceed with the unloading of its cargo of SP95 unleaded petrol and kerosene (PL),” stated a joint press release from Galana Raffinerie Terminal (GRT) and Plateforme Terminal Pétrolier (PTP). This reorganization follows the “operational arrangements adopted by the Malagasy Hydrocarbons Office (OMH) during the night of August 13 to 14, to ensure the continuity of the country’s petroleum product supply,” the statement added.
By prioritizing the Torm Eva’s operations, the OMH aims to maintain the availability of unleaded petrol and kerosene on the national market and secure supply, amid concerns from the Groupement des pétroliers de Madagascar (GPM) regarding potential disruptions. “As soon as these products are unloaded, they are immediately dispatched to supply the market,” emphasized Cydolain Raveloson, Director General of the Malagasy Hydrocarbons Office.
Following the unloading of the Torm Eva’s SP95 and kerosene, the Sunda 1 will be returned to the quay. The diesel tanker will then resume unloading its 64,000 m3 (77,000 tons) cargo of diesel, intended primarily for the country’s energy needs as well as its strategic diesel reserves, according to Guillot Ramilison, Director General of the State Procurement of Madagascar (SPM).
