Madagascar is participating in the SADC Summit in Durban, South Africa, in an unprecedented position. The country was expected to attend as the outgoing chair of the organization, before renouncing this mandate following the crisis of September 2025.
The political crisis of September and October 2025 reshuffled the cards. After the fall of former President Andry Rajoelina in October, the Republic’s Refoundation presidency announced that the Great Island was withdrawing from the SADC chairmanship to focus on the country’s refoundation process.
Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, Head of State, is expected to attend the 46th SADC Summit in person. This will be his first physical participation in a SADC summit. While Madagascar remains suspended from African Union activities, it continues to participate fully in SADC proceedings.
The summit will focus on the theme: “Resilient, sustainable and inclusive industrialization through infrastructure development, agricultural transformation and the valorization of critical minerals, for a more equitable world.”
Although the Madagascar dossier is not explicitly on the official agenda for the heads of state, the SADC Troika on Politics, Defense and Security remains closely involved in monitoring the political and security situation in the country, particularly regarding the timeline for the constitutional referendum and presidential elections scheduled before the end of 2027.
