COOPERATION – IMF reaches agreement with Guinea for a $440 million aid program

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) announced on Wednesday that it has reached an agreement with the Guinean government for an aid program totaling $439 million to “strengthen the country’s fiscal and monetary position.” This 41-month program still requires approval from the Fund’s Executive Board, which is expected to meet soon. It is also intended to help the country finalize its iron ore mining project in Simandou, considered the largest untapped iron deposit in the world.

This project is expected to “create significant opportunities to support higher growth and better revenue mobilization” for the country, said Izabela Karpowicz, the IMF mission chief on the ground, in a statement. “The proposed aid program should help the authorities leverage these opportunities to create sustainable development conditions, with investment in infrastructure and people, economic diversification, and prudent macroeconomic policies,” she detailed.

More broadly, the Fund estimated that the Guinean economy has shown resilience to numerous external shocks in recent years, with growth expected to accelerate in the medium term. While inflation is also rising, it is expected to remain relatively contained and transitory. The IMF projects growth of over 8% this year, with inflation around 4%.

General Doumbouya was elected president for a seven-year term on December 28, 2025, despite his initial promise to return power to civilians at the end of a transition period. General Doumbouya has ruled Guinea with an iron fist since the 2021 coup d’état.

In recent years, several political parties have been suspended, demonstrations have been banned since 2022 and are being suppressed, and numerous opposition and civil society leaders have been arrested, convicted, or forced into exile.
