Sanitation operations are gradually transforming several sites in the city of Antananarivo, though the Urban Commune faces some resistance.
The site above the Ambohidahy tunnel has been transformed. Piles of waste that once littered the area have disappeared. The Urban Commune of Antananarivo (CUA) removed a truckload of trash during an operation yesterday morning. Local vendors noted that no cleaning had been done there for years.
The La Réunion Kely site in Ampefiloha has also seen improvements. Jerry Nirina Andriamasinantoanina, Director of Urban Planning for Antananarivo, stated that five truckloads of waste were removed from the area.
In Analakely, the installation of new trash bins near street stalls has led to a cleaner environment. Furthermore, municipal agents are strictly enforcing rules to keep street vendors off the roadways, particularly in front of the Analakely Pavilion.
Despite these efforts, significant challenges remain. Waste is still being scattered near bins, and public urination and littering persist in areas like the entrances to the Ambohidahy and Ambohijatovo tunnels. In Behoririka, street vendors continue to occupy the road, causing traffic congestion.
Jerry Nirina Andriamasinantoanina emphasized that the municipality is currently stuck in a cycle of addressing daily emergencies rather than long-term planning. However, the municipal team is following the roadmap set by the President of the Special Delegation (PDS) of Antananarivo, aiming to restore the capital’s luster by December.
