EPIDEMIC – Over 5,000 Mpox cases reported since December, nearly 134,500 vaccine doses administered

The threshold of 5,000 reported Mpox cases has now been crossed in Madagascar. According to the latest report from the National Public Health Emergency Operations Center (COUSP), as of August 10, 5,045 cases have been recorded since the start of the epidemic on December 18, 2025. Among these, 3,333 cases have been confirmed, 2,348 people have recovered, and 22 deaths have been reported.

The virus remains under close surveillance in Toamasina, currently considered one of the main epicenters. Of the 53 new confirmed cases in the latest report, 49 were identified in Toamasina I and two in Toamasina II. Four additional cases were recorded in other districts. Furthermore, 82 suspected cases remain under observation.

Vaccination remains a primary preventive measure and is currently free of charge. Data from the Ministry of Public Health’s Expanded Program on Immunization shows that as of August 9, 134,416 doses have been administered, including 111,508 first doses. Vaccines are available at basic health centers and vaccination sites, with a specific focus on raising awareness in Toamasina.

In the port city, local response efforts are being organized. A recent meeting involving Fokontany leaders, district officials, and the Atsinanana COUSP team has strengthened surveillance and prevention protocols. Monitoring of patients in neighborhoods will be intensified with the support of community health workers, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Prevention measures will be reinforced in high-traffic areas, and vaccination awareness campaigns will be intensified in the Fokontany with the highest case numbers. Specific action plans for each Fokontany will outline local interventions and responsibilities.
