The ancient wisdom of the highlands speaks of the connection between the hills of Ambohijanahary, Mahamasina, and the heart of Antananarivo. These landscapes, steeped in history, evoke deep nostalgia, much like the verses of Jean Narivony regarding the Ankaratra mountains.
Reflecting on the history of the capital, from the baptism of Queen Ranavalona II in 1869 to the architectural landmarks like the Tranovato Anatirova Church and the Manjakamiadana Palace, the city stands as a testament to time. The landscape, characterized by its hills, valleys, and rice fields, has evolved significantly since the colonial era.
The development of the railway from Toamasina to Antananarivo, initiated by General Gallieni and completed in 1910 with the inauguration of the Soarano station, transformed the city’s geography. Urban planning projects, such as the ‘Plan Geo Cassaigne’ in 1922 and the subsequent developments in Ampefiloha and 67 Hectares, have reshaped the low-lying areas, reminding us of the city’s relationship with water and the marshlands of the Ikopa river basin.
