Traditional games of the past will soon return to the heart of Antananarivo. On August 15 and 16, the Antaninarenina Garden will host ‘Zara Lalao’, a cultural and solidarity event organized by the association Sombiny Haiko, with the ambition of passing on Malagasy heritage to younger generations while supporting vulnerable children.
For Johary Elsie Fabienne Solofo, president of Sombiny Haiko in Madagascar, the goal is primarily to revive traditions. The event will feature iconic games such as Jomaka, Sabaka, Vitsilihy, Raosy Jamba, Tsobato, Kanety, Zoera, and Papango, alongside storytelling and a traditional Malagasy ‘arendrina’ (lantern) workshop.
Admission is free and open to all. Beyond the play areas, the event will offer an immersive experience into Malagasy culture, including an artisan exhibition at ‘Trano Eva’, food stalls, and performances by association members and guest artists like Melky, Ken, and Mamina.
Founded in October 2025 by Manou Rasalimanitra, Sombiny Haiko is a non-profit charity composed of twenty-six women from diverse professional backgrounds. Their mission is to support vulnerable children through education, nutrition, health, and cultural initiatives. The association currently supports 120 children and plans to expand its reach across Madagascar and internationally, starting with Paris.
