Professor Narivelo Rajaonarimanana shed light on the history, symbols, and heritage value of the ‘teza’ during the 107th Café-Histoire held at the Museum of Photography.
Though they appear silent, they tell an ancient story. The ‘teza’, commemorative posts from the former Betsileo kingdom of Manandriana, revealed some of their secrets during the 107th Café-Histoire, organized on Saturday at the Museum of Photography. Professor Narivelo Rajaonarimanana shared years of research dedicated to these iconic monuments.
Between 1972 and 1976, he conducted field surveys in Manandriana and identified 43 sites, with numerous ‘teza’ photographed and studied alongside other researchers. His work also led him to create sketches to better understand their carved motifs. ‘The teza feature a great diversity of patterns, ranging from geometric shapes to representations of zebu and crocodiles,’ the professor explained. He even noted the existence of a ‘teza’ bearing inscriptions in the Latin alphabet.
Erected in honor of chiefs and high-ranking figures, these posts bear witness to funeral beliefs, the memory of ancestors, and the craftsmanship of ancient Betsileo sculptors. Their very name refers to the idea of strength and durability, much like the hard heartwood of a tree.
For Narivelo Rajaonarimanana, these monuments constitute a precious source for understanding the history and culture of Manandriana. ‘There are still many teza left to document,’ he emphasized, encouraging researchers and students to continue field investigations.
